Are you in an unhealthy relationship?

You may be in an unhealthy relationship if your boyfriend or girlfriend engages in any of the following behaviors:

  • Becomes easily angry when you make plans away from them.
  • Critiques the way you act, look, or dress.
  • Spies on your social networking sites, email accounts, journal entries, or texts.
  • Loses control of his/her temper after fights, sometimes breaking things or punching walls.
  • Punishes you after a fight by not talking to you or withholding affection.
  • Blames you for the problems that occur in his/her life.
  • Claims all the power in the relationship, making all decisions regarding what you do in your free time and who you can be in contact with.
  • Becomes extremely jealous if you talk to or hang out with someone else.
  • Tries to force you to go farther sexually than you wish to.
  • Threatens hurting you or leaving you when he/she is upset.
  • Controls your life in any way.
  • Lies to you or keeps important information from you.
  • Makes fun of your passions, interests, or opinions.

You may be in an unhealthy relationship if one or more of the following relate to you:

  • You feel less happy or less like yourself after being with your partner.
  • You find yourself afraid of your partner at times.
  • You have lost control over some part of your life, such as who your friends are, what activities you can do, or what you can wear.
  • You have to worry if your partner will become jealous every time you interact with another person.
  • Your friends and family have voiced concern over your relationship.
