How You Can Avoid Dangerous Situations

While the victim is never to blame for sexual assault,
there are some ways to reduce the risk of being assaulted.

  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going if you are headed to a new area of town or going with new friends.
  • Avoid isolated areas. Attempt to be near groups of people if possible.
  • Walk with purpose. Try to not seem lost, even if you are.
  • Trust your instincts. If a situation seems unsafe, leave as soon as possible.
  • Carry a charged cell phone with you and money for a cab or bus.
  • If you are on campus, look for a blue light and press the emergency phone button if in trouble.
  • Call the SAFE bus, StarMetro, GOTCHA Cart, Nole Cab or Night Nole for transportation, rather than walking alone. — FSU Transportation Options
  • Avoid wearing headphones, especially when walking alone.
  • Do not leave your drink unattended at parties or clubs.
  • If you feel pressured by someone, do not feel obligated to do anything you are not comfortable with.
  • If you feel that you are in danger, lie to get out of the situation, call for help, or run. Just get out!
  • Consider taking a self-defense class. Try FSUPD’s RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) Program.
